The term "Odisha" is derived from the ancient Prakrit word "Odda Visaya," which appears in Rajendra Chola I's Tirumalai inscription dated 1025 AD. The area has been known by several names over the ages. Sarala Das, an Odia language translator of the Mahabharata from the 15th century, called the area "Odra Rashtra" in her writings. The region is referred to as "Odisha" or "Odisha Rajya" in the inscriptions of Kapilendra Deva from the Gajapati Dynasty (1435–1467), which further solidifies the region's reputation as a historical and culturally rich region.
