Cuttack, an ancient city in Odisha, holds historical and cultural significance. It served as the capital of Odisha before Bhubaneswar. The name “Cuttack” derives from the word “Kataka,” meaning a military camp or seat of government protected by the army. It is known as the business capital of Odisha.

Geographically, Cuttack is located between 20 degrees 03 minutes to 20 degrees 40 minutes North latitude and 84 degrees 58 minutes to 86 degrees 20 minutes East longitude. The city is bordered by the Mahanadi River to the north and the Kathajodi River to the south. Covering an area of 3932 sq km, Cuttack has a tropical climate with hot summers and cold winters. The district receives heavy rainfall during the monsoon season, primarily in July and August.

Agriculture is the mainstay of the local economy, with about 76% of the population dependent on it. The district is known for its cultivation of rice, pulses, oilseeds, jute, sugarcane, coconut, and turmeric. Cash crops play a significant role in the district’s economic growth. Cuttack is also renowned for its handicrafts, including silver filigree works, horn works, Patta Chitra, Dokra casting, and more. Cuttack is home to various industries, including Indian Metals and Ferro Alloys, Paradeep Oxygen, and Odisha Magnetics. The district has educational institutions like Secondary Board High School, Ravenshaw University, SCB Medical College, and technical institutes like Bhubanananda Odisha School of Engineering. According to the 2011 Census, Cuttack district has a total population of 2,624,470, with a population density of 667 per sq km. The literacy rate in the district is 85.5%, and the sex ratio is 940 females per 1000 males.
