Khordha District was formed on April 1st, 1993, after it was separated from the existing Puri district. The district, along with Puri and Nayagarh, was created as a result of the division of the original Puri district.

Geographically, Khordha District is located between 19 degrees 55 minutes to 20 degrees 25 minutes North Latitude and 84 degrees 55 minutes to 86 degrees 5 minutes East Longitude. Its climate is influenced by its proximity to the Bay of Bengal and the presence of the Chilika Lake. The district experiences an average rainfall of 1408mm and has a maximum temperature of 42.2 degrees Celsius and a minimum temperature of 11.1 degrees Celsius. The relative humidity ranges from 46% to 89%.

Khordha District is situated in the East and Southeastern coastal plain and falls under the agro-climatic zone. The district is blessed with various types of soil, including sandy-loam, loam, clay-loam, and clayey soil, which support diverse agricultural ecosystems. The district can be divided into two sub-regions: the Deltaic Alluvium sub-region, which includes Balianta, Balipatna, and Chilika blocks, and the Lateritic sub-region, which includes Banpur, Begunia, Bhubaneswar, Bolagarh, Jatni, Khordha, and Tangi.
