A popular tourist destination in Bhubaneswar is the revered Mukteswara Temple, which was constructed in the 10th century and is known as a “Gem of Odisha” for its magnificent architecture, exquisite sculpture, and intricate carvings.

Rich History:

According to mythology, this temple was constructed by King Yayati I of the Somavamshi Dynasty, which is also attributed with the construction of a number of imposing temples in Bhubaneswar, often known as the Temple City of India.

Architectural Grace:

The temple is around 35 feet tall and was constructed in the Kalinga architectural style. It is known as a “Gem of Odisha” for its ornate architecture, which includes detailed carvings, diamond-shaped windows with latticework, and statues of figures from the well-known Panchatantra stories.

Distinctive Features:

The entrance to the temple has a spectacular arched-shaped gateway (Torana). It is one of the few temples in the city built in the Pitha Deula architectural style, which comprises a square structure with a pyramidal roof. One of the distinctive temple styles of Kalinga architecture is this one.

Sculptural Highlight:

Two pillars with sculptures of smiling women wearing beads and ornaments flank the arched entryway, which has a distinctive Buddhist architectural influence. Additional decorations include carvings of peacocks and monkeys as well as sculptures with intricate scroll work and feminine shapes.

Temple Complex:

In addition to the main temple, the grounds also have minor shrines with Shiva Lingas. Within the temple grounds, on the eastern side, is a tank named Marichi Kunda, and in the southwest corner is a well. According to lore, a dip in Marichi Kund helps treat female infertility.

There is no entry fee to visit the Bhubaneswar Mukteswara Temple. Devotees can enter the temple as early as 6.30 am. The closing time of the shrine is 7.30 pm and it remains open on all days.

The temple is conveniently located and can be reached easily. The Biju Patnaik International Airport is about 4.5 km away, while the Bhubaneswar Railway Station is about 4.4 km away. Taxi, auto-rickshaw, and local buses are readily available for transportation.
