Trip details
The Golden Triangle is Odisha’s classic first trip. In three days you see the temple city of Bhubaneswar, pray at Lord Jagannath’s shrine in Puri, stand before the giant stone wheels of the Konark Sun Temple and take a boat across Chilika Lake, India’s largest brackish-water lagoon. Distances are short, roads are good, and every stop is a highlight, which makes this the perfect plan for first-time visitors and families.
Trip at a glance
- Duration: 3 days / 2 nights
- Route: Bhubaneswar → Puri → Konark → Chilika
- Best time: October to March
- Difficulty: Easy, mostly by car with short walks
- Ideal for: First-time visitors, families, couples and pilgrims
Day-by-day itinerary
Day 1: Bhubaneswar, the Temple City
- Morning: Start at the Lingaraj Temple, the grandest of Bhubaneswar’s old temples. Non-Hindus can view it from the platform outside the boundary wall.
- Late morning: Walk to the Mukteswara Temple, famous for its carved stone gateway, and the Rajarani Temple set in a quiet garden.
- Afternoon: Visit the Khandagiri and Udayagiri caves, carved for Jain monks over two thousand years ago.
- Evening: Drive to the Dhauli Shanti Stupa above the Daya river for sunset, then stay the night in Bhubaneswar.
Day 2: Puri, the abode of Lord Jagannath
- Morning: Drive to Puri (about 60 km). Stop at Pipili for its colourful appliqué work and, if time allows, at the artist village of Raghurajpur.
- Midday: Darshan at the Jagannath Temple and taste Mahaprasad at Ananda Bazar. Only Hindus are allowed inside the temple.
- Evening: Relax on Golden Beach and walk along the sea front to Swargadwar. Stay the night in Puri.
Day 3: Konark and Chilika
- Early morning: Take the scenic Marine Drive to Konark (about 35 km), stopping at Chandrabhaga beach for sunrise.
- Morning: Explore the Konark Sun Temple, the 13th-century UNESCO World Heritage chariot temple of the Sun God. Hire a licensed guide to understand the carvings and the sundial wheels.
- Afternoon: Drive to Satapada on Chilika Lake for a boat ride to spot Irrawaddy dolphins and visit the point where the lagoon meets the sea.
- Evening: Return to Puri or Bhubaneswar for your onward journey.
Best time to visit
October to March is the best season, with pleasant days and calm seas. November to February is also the time when migratory birds arrive at Chilika. Summers (April to June) are hot and humid, and the monsoon can make boat rides uncertain. For a festival trip, plan around Rath Yatra in Puri (June or July) or the Konark Dance Festival in December, and book stays early.
How to reach
- By air: Biju Patnaik International Airport, Bhubaneswar, has flights from all major Indian cities.
- By rail: Bhubaneswar and Puri are well connected by train with Kolkata, Delhi, Chennai, Hyderabad and other cities.
- By road: A private cab is the most convenient way to do this circuit. Buses also run between Bhubaneswar, Puri and Konark.
Where to stay
Stay one night in Bhubaneswar and one night in Puri. Both cities have options for every budget, from budget lodges to beach resorts. Puri fills up quickly during festivals and holidays, so book in advance.
Travel tips

- Start early each day to avoid heat and crowds.
- Use only licensed guides at Konark and agree on boat prices at Chilika before you board.

- Carry water, sunscreen and a hat, especially for Konark and the Chilika boat ride.
Frequently asked questions
Is 3 days enough for Bhubaneswar, Puri and Konark?
Yes. Three days cover the main sights at a comfortable pace. Add a fourth day if you want to stay longer at Chilika or visit Raghurajpur and Pipili properly.
Can I visit Konark and Chilika on the same day?
Yes, if you start early. See Konark in the morning and reach Satapada on Chilika by early afternoon for the boat ride.
Can non-Hindus enter the Jagannath and Lingaraj temples?
No. Only Hindus are allowed inside. Visitors can view the Lingaraj Temple from a platform outside and see the Jagannath Temple from nearby rooftops.
Where can I see dolphins at Chilika?
Satapada, near the mouth of the lagoon, is the best place to see Irrawaddy dolphins on a boat ride.
