The Raghurajpur Heritage Village in Puri district is one of the most rewarding cultural stops in Odisha, a small village where almost every house doubles as an artist’s studio. Painters, palm-leaf engravers, mask makers and toy makers work on their verandas, and visitors are welcome to walk in, watch and talk to the artists about their craft.
Located a short drive from Puri, it is easy to add to a Puri or Konark itinerary, yet it feels a world away from the crowds of the temple town. A visit to the Raghurajpur Heritage Village is less about sightseeing and more about meeting people who have kept a centuries-old art alive.
About the Raghurajpur Heritage Village
Raghurajpur lies on the southern bank of the Bhargavi river, surrounded by paddy fields, coconut palms and betel vine plantations. Odisha Tourism places it about 12 km from Puri, while other sources say around 14 km, depending on the route.
The village has about 120 houses arranged in two facing rows, and many walls are decorated with colourful murals. Odisha Tourism notes that every house has an artist, and an Odisha Tourism blog puts the number of Chitrakars (pattachitra painters) at roughly 500.
After a documentation project begun by INTACH in 1998, Raghurajpur was selected in 2000 as Odisha’s first heritage village of cultural significance. More recently, the Ministry of Tourism named it a Best Tourism Village 2023 in the Silver category.
The Art of Pattachitra
Pattachitra is a traditional style of painting on specially prepared cloth, with bold lines, bright natural colours and intricate borders. Themes come mostly from Indian mythology, especially the stories of Lord Jagannath, Krishna and the epics. Odisha Tourism describes the village as the custodian of a craft that is around 900 years old.
A single detailed painting can take days or even weeks. The cloth is first coated with a paste made from chalk and tamarind seed gum, then polished to a smooth surface. Outlines are drawn freehand, colours are filled layer by layer, and fine borders are added last. Watching this slow, patient process is the real highlight of any visit.
The Chitrakars still make their own paints from natural sources and craft their own brushes. Odisha Tourism also records that when the artisans struggled in the 1940s, an American named Helena Zealy helped revive the art through exhibitions in the United States.

The village is also the birthplace of the legendary Odissi guru Kelucharan Mohapatra, a Padma Vibhushan awardee, which adds a special pride to its artistic identity.
