Ramachandi beach is where the Kushabhadra river slips into the Bay of Bengal, a few kilometres short of Konark in Puri district. A quiet river mouth, a wide sweep of sand and an old goddess shrine on the bank make it one of the most rewarding stops along the Puri–Konark Marine Drive.

The spot lies about 7 km before Konark on the Marine Drive road from Puri, and about 25 km from Puri town. Unlike the crowded main beach at Puri, it feels open and unhurried, and many travellers end up spending far longer here than they planned.

The Ramachandi Temple and Its Legend

On the riverbank stands the temple of Goddess Ramachandi, regarded as a benevolent form of Chandi and one of the well-known Shakta pithas of Puri district. Many locals believe she is the presiding deity of Konark, and the shrine is said to be older than the Konark Sun Temple itself.

The temple is architecturally modest, and much of the original structure has suffered over time. What draws devotees is the goddess and the stories around her.

Some local traditions instead connect the shrine with Mayadevi, the wife of Surya, the Sun God worshipped at Konark. Historians have not settled the question, but either way the temple is closely tied to the Sun Temple’s story. The shrine’s annual festival, along with the Handi Bhanga Yatra, draws devotees from nearby villages.

A popular legend tells how Kalapahad, after attacking the Sun Temple, came to Ramachandi. The goddess, disguised as a maidservant, asked him to wait while she fetched water. When she did not return, he followed her to the river and saw her floating in the middle of the flooded stream – and turned back. Later, she is said to have appeared in a priest’s dream and asked for a temple on the bank.

What to See at Ramachandi Beach

The real charm of Ramachandi beach is the meeting of river and sea. On one side you have the calm, shallow Kushabhadra; on the other, the open waves of the Bay of Bengal.

Things to Do at Ramachandi Beach

How to Reach Ramachandi Beach

If you are coming from Bhubaneswar, the usual route is via Pipili to Konark and then a short drive back along the Marine Drive towards Puri. Two-wheelers are also a popular way to explore this coastal road at your own pace.

A comfortable plan is to leave Puri in the morning, stop at Ramachandi beach, and continue to the Konark Sun Temple, just 7 km further on.

Best Time to Visit

October to March is the best season, with cool breezes, clear skies and calm conditions for boating. This is also when the Eco Retreat usually operates, so the area is livelier.

Summer (April–June) is hot and humid, so plan early mornings or evenings. During the monsoon, the river swells and the sea turns rough – enjoy the views, but stay out of the water.

Timings and Entry

There is no entry fee to visit Ramachandi beach. The beach is best enjoyed in daylight, from early morning to sunset. Temple darshan hours are not officially published, so check locally if you want to visit the shrine at a particular time. Boating and water sports are charged separately by operators.
