Sanaghagra waterfall (also spelt Sanaghagara) is a pretty, year-round cascade just outside Keonjhar town in Odisha’s Kendujhar district. It is popular with families and picnic groups. Within a short drive of town, you get falling water, forest-covered hills and a landscaped park with boating, which makes it the easiest nature outing in Keonjhar.
“Sana” means small in Odia. The fall is the smaller sibling of the nearby Badaghagara (“big”) waterfall on the same stream. Here is everything you need to know before you go.
About Sanaghagra Waterfall
The fall is fed by the Machha Kandana stream (also called Sanamachhakandana), which drains into the Baitarani River. According to Odisha Tourism, the water drops in two cascades over dark dolerite rock and splits into two streams at the bottom. It flows throughout the year, though it is fullest after the monsoon.
The fall sits in a hilly forest tract of about 488 hectares of mixed deciduous forest beside the national highway towards Sambalpur, near Anjar village. The area lies around 1,950 ft above sea level, so it stays noticeably cooler than the coastal plains.
Don’t expect a towering drop. The fall’s charm lies in its setting: the white water against black rock, the sound of the stream in the trees and the easy access from town. Many Keonjhar residents treat it as their go-to weekend escape, and first-time visitors to the district often make it their first stop. Plan for two to three hours if you also want to use the park and go boating.
What to See and Do
- The cascade and pool: Steps lead down to the plunge pool at the base of the fall. The pool is fenced for safety, and the spray makes the steps slippery.
- Boating: An artificial lake in the adjoining park offers boating, a hit with children.
- Gardens and play areas: The park has a rose garden, a flower park, a children’s park with swings and covered sheds for resting. The Sanaghagara Development Society manages and develops the site.
- Short forest walks: The surrounding jungle offers easy walks and trekking around the hills.
- Photography: The two-stream fall framed by rocks and trees is the classic shot. Morning light is softest.
Bathing near the fall has been allowed with restrictions in the past. Follow the notice boards and any instructions from staff on the day.
Badaghagara: The Bigger Sister
Upstream on the same stream is Badaghagara waterfall, which Odisha Tourism describes as about 100 feet high. It is roughly 10 km from Keonjhar town and about 6 km from Sanaghagra waterfall. A small dam above the fall offers wide views, and forest trails attract trekkers. If you have half a day, visit both. Most travellers see Sanaghagra waterfall first and then continue to Badaghagara.
How to Reach Sanaghagra Waterfall
- By air: The nearest major airport is Biju Patnaik International Airport, Bhubaneswar, about 230 km from Keonjhar.
- By rail: Keonjhar railway station is about 4 km from town. From there, take an auto or taxi to the falls.
- By road: Keonjhar town is well connected by bus to Bhubaneswar, Cuttack and Balasore. The fall is about 6–8 km from Keonjhar town on the highway towards Sambalpur, an easy auto or taxi ride.
Best Time to Visit
The fall flows year-round, but the best time to visit Sanaghagra waterfall is from October to February. The weather is cool and the water is still strong after the rains. November to January is peak picnic season, so the site can get crowded on weekends and holidays.
The monsoon (July–September) shows the fall at its most powerful. However, rocks and steps are very slippery then, and access to the pool may be restricted. Summer is hot, but the forest keeps the site somewhat cooler than town.
Timings, Entry and Stay
The park is generally open during daylight hours. We could not verify current timings, entry fees or boating charges from official sources, so check with the site office or the Keonjhar tourist office on arrival.
For overnight stays, the Orissa Post reported an OTDC Panthasala and government guest houses about 2 km from the fall. Odisha Tourism also lists a Sanaghagra Nature Camp with tented stays under its eco-tourism programme. Book through the official Odisha eco-tourism portal. Keonjhar town also has a range of private hotels.
